On October 19th and 20th, technicians from Retrofit (a Peoples Gas approved firm) and Sinan, will be inspecting all of the radiator traps in the building to identify those traps that need to be replaced. Having radiator traps that are working properly will help heat the building more efficiently and save us money on our gas bill.

  • The inspection will require the heat to be on all day, for both of those days in all the apartments.

  • We must be able to access your apartment.  There are a few units where Sinan does not have the keys and will be contacting those owners to secure those keys.  

  • If you have an animal in your apartment, please either plan on being there or temporarily relocate your animal for those two days.

  • The technicians and Sinan will have PPE to make sure everyone is safe during the inspection. 

  • Please contact Sinan with any questions regarding the inspection.


 

Since we no longer are allowing window air conditioners to be installed in our building, we are asking residents who have window air conditioners stored in the air conditioner storage room, to remove them in order to accommodate storage of your portable air conditioners.

Please remove all window air conditioners from the a/c room by Oct 15th. After that date, all window air conditioning units in that room will be removed by the maintenance staff.

An Association Member has been documented spraying two ficus trees in the Ballroom with an unknown substance on multiple nights recently. Subsequently, both ficus trees have developed shriveled, yellowing leaves and a failing general condition.

We ask all residents to refrain from treating the plants without the knowledge of and approval of Sinan, who coordinates all plant care for the Association.

MAILROOM PACKAGES STOLEN:
At approximately 3 am on June 13th, a female intruder approximately thirty years old with dark hair, took about
five packages from our mailroom. We are unsure as to her point of entry and believe that she may have been a
guest in the building. She spent about six minutes in the mailroom, opened and decided which packages to
take, merged the items she wanted into a larger box, took the smaller emty boxes and left via the front
entranceway.
Vandalism and theft is a crime and compromises the security of all Building residents. Please report any
suspicious activity to the Chicago Police Department.
With the increase in deliveries, it is encouraged that you retrieve your packages as soon as you receive notice

On Wednesday March 18th, between the hours of 12AM-2AM, the passenger elevator will be shut down so that the elevator electrical system can be upgraded.  Please contact Sinan for any emergency during this time.  We are sorry for the inconvenience this disruption may cause you.

Sinan and Tim's priority will be to continually clean and disinfect door knobs and surfaces during this critical time.

3/1/20 

On March 9th, the old freight elevator will be taken out of service and the elevator modernization work will begin.  The majority of the parts have arrived and the prep work that we needed to do before the project could begin is complete.

 

This Thursday, March 5th, the front passenger elevator will be taken out of service, for the day, in order to complete an outstanding issue that needs to be taken care of before the freight elevator is shut down.  Only the freight elevator will be available on this day.  The elevator technicians will be here all day,  and should an issue arise with the freight elevator during the day, the technicians should be able to resolve it quickly.

Hello Neighbors,

As discussed in the Annual Association Meeting,  I’ve been monitoring the lake level and collecting statistics on the relationship of the lake level altitude to the altitude of the boat room.  Good news!  The lake level has been trending down steadily over that period and is actually down 8.5” over that period.

 

1.       On December 13th, the lake level was 1.5” higher than the boat room floor.

2.       On December 27th, the lake level was 2.5” below the boat room floor.

3.       On January 6th, the lake level had further receded to 7” below the boat room floor.

 

The above measurements were taken on days of relative calm weather and flat water.  The precision of the data will improve with more readings which I intend to gather along with visualizations of the trends and recommendations for milestones and board action.  I’d be much obliged if these stats are shared with the larger association perhaps in the meeting minutes or posted to the website.

With a heavy heart we announce the passing of John M. Downs

 

Longtime Sherwinite, father of daughter Ana Maria and sons Sean and Michael

“Thomas” Downs, John was an accomplished artist and illustrator and among

many artistic endeavors, covered many high-profile courtroom cases for the

Chicago Sun Times, Daily News and others.

Beloved in our community, John will be deeply missed.

The Sun Times ran a wonderful tribute to him which can be found online.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Dear Association Members and Residents, 

In the last week, a security camera video cable feeding the camera on the South Easement was cut once in the North Storage Room, once in the Laundry Room and once in the basement hallway.

And on four occasions, a perpetrator used a broom to conceal their identity from the security cameras as they removed SOTL complaint forms from the Lobby. 

An Association Member has been identified in the vicinity at the time of the vandalism. Police Reports are being filed in all instances. 

If you see anyone tampering with the security system or Association property in the Common Areas, please report it to the Board of Directors.

Attention SOTL Association Members and Residents,

The Board has updated several Association rules pertaining to smoking, pets, and the placement of personal items in SOTL Common Areas and Elements. Please find a link to the updated rules and online Nuisance Report Form.

 

Some of the areas addressed include:

 

-Clarification of areas where smoking is permitted in the outdoor Common Areas. Please review the new smoking rules and enforcement information.

 

- Clarification of pet policies in relation to the use of the freight elevator, and what pet owners should do when the freight elevator is down - which may be recurrent until the elevator modernization process id completed.

 

- Clarification of the placement of personal items in Common Areas and Elements. The SOTL Board will not prevent Association Members and residents (with unit owner permission) from utilizing door bell cameras on their doors or immediate doorframe to provide security in an area where there is little or no expectation of privacy (the immediate vicinity of one's doorway). 

 

However, the Board does not and will not allow residents to use remotely mounted cameras to monitor other areas of the building besides their own personal doorways, or attach them to Common Elements or Areas beyond their unit's door or doorframe. 

 

The Board reserves the right to allow case-by-case exceptions to the general rule of not attaching personal items to Common Elements and Areas. Just as we allow residents to attach Mezuzahs onto their door frames, we will allow doorbell cameras to be used on owners' unit doors or door frames, or rental unit doors and door frames with unit owner permission.

 

The Board has also updated the Notice of Nuisance procedures and report form to reflect the use of photography to corroborate single witness Nuisance reports. Please find an updated Notice of Nuisance Form attached. Blank forms may also be found in the Mailroom. Please note that the enforcement of rules is dependent on written witness complaints using the Notice of Nuisance Forms and procedures.
